Jan Schär, IoT Consultant
Hello, I’m thrilled to meet you. With a rich tapestry of experience that spans more than two decades, I’ve dedicated my life to transforming the way we use and view technology.
I began my journey studying Civil Engineering, a decision that led to an enriching 15-year career as a civil engineer on large construction projects. I witnessed the birth of grand structures, becoming an integral part of their existence. But I wasn’t just a passive observer; my hands and mind were deeply involved in the creation process. As a full-stack developer for more than two decades, I’ve also been a part of various projects, some of which coincided with these large construction projects. My understanding of the practicalities of construction and an instinctive grasp of code intertwine to form a unique understanding of both the physical and digital world.
My pursuit of knowledge didn’t end with civil engineering and coding. I later went on to earn a degree in Industrial Engineering. For the past six years, I’ve immersed myself in the ever-evolving world of IoT, spending the last four of those years at a major corporation. Here, I’ve been able to further expand and refine my understanding of IoT and IIoT, gaining valuable insights into their application in mid to large scale enterprises.
Entrepreneurship has always been a passion of mine, and six years ago, I turned that passion into reality when I founded ShopOfThings.ch. This platform has since become one of the largest marketplaces for IoT products, and for the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of leading Thingware LLC, the parent company of ShopOfThings.
Throughout my career, I’ve always believed in the power of broad knowledge. It’s why I don’t limit myself to just practical or architectural queries. Instead, I delve into planning issues, and this ability to look at the larger picture has proven to be a key strength.
Outside of work, I find balance in life through family and exploration. You’ll often find me embarking on multi-day backpacking trips with my wife and our three children, absorbing the beauty of our surroundings. I also spend time leading a youth group, passing on the wisdom I’ve gained over the years, and learning from the vibrant energy of the young minds I guide.
I welcome you to join me as we delve deeper into the world of IoT, leveraging our shared passion to shape the technological landscape of tomorrow. Let’s create a future that’s smart, efficient, and sustainable.
